When I went to the beach today, the tide was lower than I’ve seen it in quite a while. The rocks where seals like to sun themselves were visible, and yes, there was a seal on one (despite the lack of sunshine). Another seal splashed nearby–playing, maybe, or capturing his lunch. I also saw a couple Great Blue Herons, and as I watched one catch and eat a fish, several Bald Eagles swooped overhead. I’m thinking there must’ve been a lot of fish out there, with seals, herons, and eagles all perusing the menu.
There were also many Cormorants and the usual assortment of ducks and gulls, and on the ground, sea stars, anemones, and deer tracks (no deer, though!). Seeing so much wildlife has got me thinking about a new camera again–mostly I just love watching all the critters, but it’s fun to capture them in photos, too, and I’d love to be able to zoom-in for some close-ups. So, time to start saving for a camera with significant zoom-ability! It still has to be a compact or “pocket” camera, though. Anyone have a camera like that? If so, I’d love to hear what kind you have and what you do and don’t like about it. Thanks!

Love the photos, Shari! You got in some wonderful shots.
Thanks, Laura.
Ooh, those are fabulous shots of the heron, even without extra zoom-ability!
Thanks! He let me get fairly close before taking exception to my presence, lol.
What a variety of life you have over there by the coast! You’ve captured the heron having lunch so nicely, and the way it flies. I just bought a Nikon D5100. The body is light and quite compact (not your pocket camera though), but you see, it’s the telelens that’s nothing near compact. You may think of buying a DSLR and a good telelens, for it’s like paradise out there where you live.
Thanks, Arti. That’s what my hubby thinks I should buy, and I imagine it’s the way to go for the best photos and most versatility. But if it’s too big and heavy, I really think I would end up leaving it at home a lot. If only I could afford both options…
Nice sequence of shots♫♪ Happy week-end♥ Here’s my SS:http://lore-eleven.blogspot.com/2013/01/curve-here.html
Thanks!
Great photos. Makes me think I have to get to the sea more.
I find spending time by the sea is oh-so-good for my soul.
Herons are such interesting birds … you can only get so close and then ff they go. They watch your every move while looking to be so nonchalant … pretty in flight too!
Great shots, despite your camera that can’t zoom in … good luck on the search for a new one!
Thanks, Susan.
Hi Shari, Lovely Saturday! For a new camera, you might consider some of the newer micro four thirds cameras. We just bought one for my MIL who wanted small and light but with the versatility of interchangeable lenses. If you specifically want a point and shoot and zoom is a top consideration, my husband (a photographer) suggested you might want to look at the Canon Powershot sx50. It has the equivalent of a 20mm-1200mm lens, and seems to get pretty good reviews. He hasn’t played with it, though, just looked at reviews. There are other superzoom cameras, too.
Thanks so much for the recommendation, Kathy (and thx to your hubby!). I’ve read a few reviews of the Powershot — will definitely put it on my list to check out further.
That sounds like a wonderful way to spend an afternoon! And great photos of the heron!
My small camera is a Panasonic Lumix, and we’ve liked it for when we travel.
Thanks, Alyce. And thanks for the camera info–someone else recommended the Lumix, too. I’ll definitely check it out!
I love these photos.
I don’t have any camera suggestions. For our needs we’ve always just had the cheapo $100 – 150 variety.
Thanks, Paul. Yes, the cheapo variety has worked well for me, too, but I think I’ll really enjoy going up a level to get that zoom feature to capture the wildlife.
Great photos, Shari.
Thanks, Kristin.
GREAT photos…thanks for sharing.
